Fakery in Orbit: THE I$$

^ brainv, how did you get that version of the photo?

Re: Fakery in Orbit: THE ISS
Yes, but my bedroom is only 5x5 m. I have a feeling all these space/ISS photos are made in similar style.Flabbergasted wrote:Heiwa,
The close-up picture of your globe would correspond to roughly 4.000 km altitude.

I found more images. I ask myself: Why is she always wearing the same clothes?simonshack wrote:

^ Looking at that last photo up close, there seems to be some very awkward clutching of the hands!
The male suits all appear to be of the same cloth! The fabric of space perhaps!
Right click view image, use mag tool cursor!

The ISS live stream video could help in your investigations. Unfortunately when the ISS is in the dark side of the Earth it is only seen a fixed image. I'm wondering if then they could point the camera to dark space to view some stars. When the astronauts went to the moon they didn't capture any starry image whatsoever!Flabbergasted wrote:I know the question of the orbiting altitude of the ISS has already been discussed on the forum. In some pictures it looks like it´s only 20-30 km from earth. In others (below), it looks more like 3,000 km. According to Wickedpedia, the ISS orbits earth at 330-410 km. I don´t know the alleged cause of this variation.
This picture is from Wickedpedia (removed the last time I looked). The ISS is seen very far from earth - certainly not 400 km. A celestial body resembling a miniature moon is hanging in the black void, bright enough to be seen, although no stars or other celestial bodies are visible.

That's the middle of New Zealand and includes the space between the two islands. It does say that in the caption on Wikipedia...Flabbergasted wrote:...This other picture (from Wikipedia) shows another landmass (I don´t know which). The "photographer" is certainly closer to earth than the one who took the picture of Simgourney. Also check out the "charming" pixel noise around the ISS and the spacewalkers.

Re: Fakery in Orbit: THE ISS
OK...here it is:Flabbergasted wrote: I wish I knew how to do the trigonometry part ...
x = distance from ISS to horizon = ?
h = altitude of ISS above surface = ~400km
r = earth radius = ~6350km
Then we have x^2 + r^2 = (r+h)^2
Resolving the equation for x yields about 2289 km
If the ISS in the "Florida" picture is above Cuba and the Horizon somewhere near Kentucky, that's what we got. So it does not look too bad, they seem to do the basic math quite well (or their computers, more precisely...)

On Oct. 26, 2012, NASA astronaut Kevin Ford, Expedition 33 flight engineer, smiles for a photo while holding a still camera in the Destiny laboratory of the International Space Station.
Plenty of loose cables hanging around in the Destiny Lab! And the light fittings appear cheap. So an old-fashioned flash is required.

Thank you all for your input on the altitude issue. It is obviously not as simple as I thought to quantify the discrepancies I perceive in those images. I will meditate some more on it and brush up my math skills!

Time is a bitch! Poor Courtney getting older by the day. Both the hairdresser and the photographer deserve to get sacked. What happened to quality control?

I like nonho's comment about it:

That was exactly my thought about the group photos but I couldn't express it as eloquently as nonho did.nonhocapito wrote:It might not be needed to fake people considering that this sort of fakery requires scientists at work anyway. But the shots have something spooky, if anything because I am not at all impressed by these faces, considering we are supposed to be in presence of top scientists. We shouldn't judge a book by his cover, you say? Well, maybe, but we do it all the time so there must be something to it. I expected to get a stronger vibe of experience and wisdom and carisma from these expressions, like you would expect from people who are highly focused, and socially highly rewarded.

Yes one might expect to see more high-brow looking individuals rather than a bunch of escapees from the St John of God Center for our less fortunate brothers and sisters.

Maybe they wanted to give them a homey feeling to help us "relate to them".
