Oh no!
2004 Sumatra earthquake, for comparison in the storyplots: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_India ... nd_tsunami
Also a bit of Hollywood in the meantime:

This image is pretty much on every news website at the moment:
From http://abcnews.go.com/International/pow ... d=16113621
Are they running away from traffic? I know, rush hour is a bitch...
I also appreciate the shop in the back that says "Mitra". I think Hoi should like this one.

"*mitra-, generally reconstructed to have meant "covenant, treaty, agreement, promise.""
You know like "Concordia".

Re: Indonesia Earthquake April 11 2012
I've been following the unfolding 'news' flashes today. Here are a few observations of mine. (Many of my observations will be introduced with "AS USUAL" - I think our forum members will allow me to do so, and also understand why I do so.)
Observation1:
As usual, the early imagery of the event we were offered (on all news channels) were of extremely low quality/resolution.
Observation 2:
As usual, a restrict number of short clips were endlessly recycled/aired over and over again (mostly showing nothing but people hanging around/looking worried). A mere handful showed relevant images of the earthquake itself, as it happened (mostly from atrociously poor, apparent "CCTV footage"). Some of this "CCTV footage" was inexplicably sped up/accelerated at superfast speed.
Observation 3:
One particular "as-earthquake-happened-clip" (seemingly shot by a cameraman) shows people escaping out of a building lobby (with a dangling roof chandelier) - while a woman walks INTO the same lobby! Does she have a death wish? Is she mad? Who on Earth would ENTER a building just as an earthquake rattles away? (woman is seen at 0:07 in below video)
full link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YORJDsYNxMU
Observation 4:
As usual, we are offered (on Youtube) horridly blurry, supposed "amateur videos" with ridiculous screams/soundtracks:

Another fact worth mentioning is the excruciatingly contradictory incoming news reports, all day long, regarding the "ALARMING TSUNAMI THREAT" - or viceversa - "THE NO TSUNAMI THREAT AT ALL". Sure, one may ascribe this uncertainty to the difficulty of gauging this threat at an early stage - but this "alert/non-alert" ping-pong game got quite frankly rather silly. If the intent of that was to convey the notion that accurate forecasts are impossible/and that modern science is powerless when faced with nature's whims, it certainly worked out nicely...
Oh - and it all happened on April 11.

Re: Indonesia Earthquake April 11 2012
2.311°N, 93.063°E is a strange epicentre of an earthquake, i.e. not on any fault line, and in the middle of an ocean plain 3 000 meters below water surface. And no (big) tsunami waves have been noticed on western Sumatra 500 kms away. So what went wrong?
Evidently the 'experts' don't know the difference between various earthquakes.

Re: Indonesia Earthquake April 11 2012
Well, it seems that this 11 April Indonesian earthquake has - thankfully - 'fizzled out', seemingly without as much as ONE reported casualty. I am left wondering how this 8.6 Richter scale seismic event ( "the 11th strongest earthquake since 1900"- according to Wickedpedia ) could possibly cause so little damage and (apparently) zero victims. The official explanation (that the tectonic plates moved horizontally rather than vertically) sounds a little odd/unsatisfactory - but then again, I'm no seismic expert...
