Mis-education, nationalism, supremacy and fake religious indoctrination. Especially on the part of the Americans!

Mass schooling of a compulsory nature really got its teeth into the United States between 1905 and 1915, though it was conceived of much earlier and pushed for throughout most of the nineteenth century. The reason given for this enormous upheaval of family life and cultural traditions was, roughly speaking, threefold:

1) To make good people. 2) To make good citizens. 3) To make each person his or her personal best. These goals are still trotted out today on a regular basis, and most of us accept them in one form or another as a decent definition of public education's mission, however short schools actually fall in achieving them. But we are dead wrong. Compounding our error is the fact that the national literature holds numerous and surprisingly consistent statements of compulsory schooling's true purpose. We have, for example, the great H. L. Mencken, who wrote in The American Mercury for April 1924 that the aim of public education is not

to fill the young of the species with knowledge and awaken their intelligence. ... Nothing could be further from the truth. The aim ... is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to put down dissent and originality. That is its aim in the United States... and that is its aim everywhere else.

Because of Mencken's reputation as a satirist, we might be tempted to dismiss this passage as a bit of hyperbolic sarcasm. His article, however, goes on to trace the template for our own educational system back to the now vanished, though never to be forgotten, military state of Prussia. And although he was certainly aware of the irony that we had recently been at war with Germany, the heir to Prussian thought and culture, Mencken was being perfectly serious here. Our educational system really is Prussian in origin, and that really is cause for concern.

The odd fact of a Prussian provenance for our schools pops up again and again once you know to look for it. William James alluded to it many times at the turn of the century. Orestes Brownson, the hero of Christopher Lasch's 1991 book, The True and Only Heaven, was publicly denouncing the Prussianization of American schools back in the 1840s. Horace Mann's "Seventh Annual Report" to the Massachusetts State Board of Education in 1843 is essentially a paean to the land of Frederick the Great and a call for its schooling to be brought here. That Prussian culture loomed large in America is hardly surprising, given our early association with that utopian state. A Prussian served as Washington's aide during the Revolutionary War, and so many German-speaking people had settled here by 1795 that Congress considered publishing a German-language edition of the federal laws. But what shocks is that we should so eagerly have adopted one of the very worst aspects of Prussian culture: an educational system deliberately designed to produce mediocre intellects, to hamstring the inner life, to deny students appreciable leadership skills, and to ensure docile and incomplete citizens 11 in order to render the populace "manageable."

It was from James Bryant Conant-president of Harvard for twenty years, WWI poison-gas specialist, WWII executive on the atomic-bomb project, high commissioner of the American zone in Germany after WWII, and truly one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century-that I first got wind of the real purposes of American schooling. Without Conant, we would probably not have the same style and degree of standardized testing that we enjoy today, nor would we be blessed with gargantuan high schools that warehouse 2,000 to 4,000 students at a time, like the famous Columbine High in Littleton, Colorado. Shortly after I retired from teaching I picked up Conant's 1959 book-length essay, The Child the Parent and the State, and was more than a little intrigued to see him mention in passing that the modem schools we attend were the result of a "revolution" engineered between 1905 and 1930. A revolution? He declines to elaborate, but he does direct the curious and the uninformed to Alexander Inglis's 1918 book, Principles of Secondary Education, in which "one saw this revolution through the eyes of a revolutionary."

Inglis, for whom a lecture in education at Harvard is named, makes it perfectly clear that compulsory schooling on this continent was intended to be just what it had been for Prussia in the 1820s: a fifth column into the burgeoning democratic movement that threatened to give the peasants and the proletarians a voice at the bargaining table. Modern, industrialized, compulsory schooling was to make a sort of surgical incision into the prospective unity of these underclasses. Divide children by subject, by age-grading, by constant rankings on tests, and by many other more subtle means, and it was unlikely that the ignorant mass of mankind, separated in childhood, would ever re-integrate into a dangerous whole.

How many countries take part in the World Series?
I am an American citizen - arguably a "patriotic" one - but after traveling the slightest bit around Europe, I am in awe of the miseducation, bad education and NO EDUCATION of myself.

It is increasingly clear to me that "America" has always been a deceptive colony of European imperialism disguised as an opportunity for liberty. Personally I am starting to doubt the meaning of the so-called war of Independence and the whole arrogant Boston scene. After all, "The New World" started as an excuse for oppression-addicts to enact a massive slavery campaign on indigenous populations the world over while pretending it was "those upstarty American colonists". But didn't London basically step in for Spain's Inquisition when the conquistadors took their empire a step "too far"? And didn't this whole "independence" trick make it seem as if "all of Europe" lost the right to fight for land in "The New World" -- while preserving the essentially British colony that it ended up being (save some skirmishes with Germans, French, etc.?)

Forgive me a rant. I call "Self-deception" on the white race. A massive, disgusting self-deception.

European imperialism - hundreds of years old - and now in such an "advanced" stage of self-deception that there is an entire country - I'm talking about my home country - full of people that don't know why they are where they are, why they have so much rich and fertile land, why they are born with a silver spoon in their mouth - who are all these brown, red, black people around them and what do they want?

Perhaps the white Imperialist leaders realized that one major thing holding back their ambitions was the moralism of their own people. So they created the spectacle "America" where the illusion of "escape" from empire was in fact a sneaky gateway for Empire to go to the new world. Or it's just a racial cultural complex of white people and they bring it wherever they go. I don't know. Probably a combination of both.

Anyway, those who profited from those campaigns - both in London and America - are still thriving, and still trading labor for worthless paper, numbers and tricks. (aka Wall Street, stocks, etc.)

Oh, and have you ever heard of the "Department of the Interior" ? LOL

That sh#t is STILL trying to get more land from the First Nations (Native Americans). They are up in this computer once in a while. I wonder what they hope to find.

One of these major slavery profiteers that still hasn't had to answer to our sense of justice and morality is JP Morgan - with thumbs bloody and deep in the 9/11-war profiteering game.

In my personal opinion, though my studies are still open on this subject, not much has changed since the founding of the United States. USA citizens are still idiotic about where their funds come from (mostly racism, stealing, war and drug profiteering, oppression, slavery) and our leaders sound "fun" or "awe inspiring" or even funny, but they are still without morals, spines or intelligence enough to cease this self-consumption and destruction. And the dynamic of "unintentional oppression" and "woops, I didn't notice you were a human being" continues, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum.

I'd like to go back to the States when the descendants of the plantation owners fess up, when nearly abandoned states like Wyoming are "gifted" back to the First Nations, or some sense of justice finally started appearing in the States.

As such, this kind of honesty doesn't look like it's ever going to arrive. Maybe it's just too big - like Russia - and the only way to manage the country is by fear and lies.

But then the question must be asked: why does such a "country" exist?

Wherever you go you find rulers who will do anything they think they can get away with, and you'll find a lot of 'regular folks' who are just struggling to get on with their lives.

There are well-educated and clued-in people all over the world, but they number in the thousands, not millions.

The average 'educated' European, IMHO, doesn't know or understand much more than the average 'educated' American.

There does tend to be magical thinking on the part of some Americans that a 'college degree' confers upon the lucky recipient a sort of invisible superiority: College educated people generally know, for example, that you can't believe conspiracy theories you read about on the Internet but that the New York Times is a very reliable source of information.

Hey, but look on the bright side: Barry Obama has a Nobel Peace Prize. Things can't be all that bad when the president of the USA is a 'light-skinned Black man' with a Nobel Peace Prize from that most-esteemed Euro-centric organization named after Mr Dynamite.

Let me tell you what your problem is, Hoi. Like all Americans abroad, you're just too cynical from sitting around in those European cafes sipping espresso with all those fashionable White 'educated' Euro-spending consumer-robots in the shadow of the Vatican. Everyone knows the seductive lure of European society is secretly dominated by black-robed priests and black-clothed anarchists sitting around in cafes and thinking black thoughts while drinking black coffee and smoking tobacco grown on third-world plantations.

You probably think I'm just making all of this up.

Fred, I'll have to - mostly - agree with you there ( just for a change... :P )

Let me express my thoughts in a 'Simple Simon' way...

There's no difference between a smart American and a smart European.
There's no difference between a stupid European and a stupid American.

I may have an extremely reduced sense of 'patriotism' - as I was dragged around (happily) in a dozen locations/countries as a child so had no real 'chance' to understand what it means. Having said that, my stomach cringes and squeals in shame for my (father's) compatriots at the Nobel commission !

As far as I can gather, most people tend to get more angry with their (stupid) compatriots rather than with foreign equivalents. Here, in my now adoptive Italy, I get the name of "Umberto Eco" slapped in my face by so-called 'intellectuals' who dismiss my research : "Surely"- they blurt - "you haven't read what the Great Umberto Eco has to say about conspiracy theories"!!".
(note: Mr. Eco teams up with James Randi and mega-shill-clown Paolo Attivissimo on 9/11 matters ...) http://www.lucioangelini.splinder.com/post/15082288

So, IMHO, there is no sense in 'feuding' or 'infighting' between sensible Westerners. It is the Western society as a whole who floats in a culture-magma gurgling in diverse states of sanity and moral values. Where are the "intellectuals" when you need them? Who speaks out against the ongoing Anglo-Euro-American massacres/genocides of civilians ? The main problem is that demented, subhuman sharks still make the rules in this frothing bloodbath - and the wiser, protective dolphins are still too few to contain the mess.

As for Hoi, I can tell you he drinks no coffee - let alone Espresso. He's also far too high up in the Roman countryside to get any shade from the Vatican. And I've never seen him dressing - or thinking - in black !

VERY well said, Hoi. I posted it on my FB page, and I hope it pisses off everyone. Maybe they'll start to question their comfort in the warm embrace of American Exceptionalism.

:P Wow! I am glad that this discussion began.

Fred and Simon, with all due respect, I think you misunderstood me based on your responses.

It isn't Europe per se that makes someone "smarter" and so your disagreement with me there (which I hope is genuine in Fred's case and not just tongue-in-cheek humor) is not a disagreement at all - the largest walking mouthpieces for European Imperialism are obviously in Europe itself, but I assumed everyone would take that as a given based on my constant reference to the problem. I lived in the Hague for the first half of 2009, for gosh shakes. Ick!

Having said that, I haven't lived "here" (wherever "here" is - Europe isn't just the Vatican) long enough to smoke in cafes and toast the duke. Then, I never lived long enough in the States to drink lattes at Starbucks. Because no length of time will convert me. I am disgustingly non-superficial by traditional Western standards and nauseatingly superficial about getting attention on this very inside problem we have as a culture. I'm not saying I'm an enigma wrapped in a mystery wrapped in bacon. College is as indoctrinating as you make it - and most people are by and large unwilling or unlucky enough to have no ability to turn the opportunity into more than a Borg cube where we learn to Borg like the Borg.

It's just that - as long as we're talking about fathers and fatherlands - my dad, Simon, is a systems troubleshooter. I was raised a troubleshooter, and I am trying to "troubleshoot" this culture so that it FUNCTIONS properly. War is not the proper function. War is failure. War is smoke coming from the keyboard and sparks flying from the monitor and wires you never noticed hanging out the back of the motherboard.

Now I am just amazed at what the slightest bit of travel and curiosity will do for the imagination when it comes to understanding one's "home system" and how to make it better - yeh, I'm talking about good old rainbow colored imagination ... it's something most everybody - regardless of Religion, race, creed, nationality, sex, age - could do with more of. Europeans need to see America - all of America - Black, Red, Brown, Yellow, White america. And Americans really need to see more than their backsides and recalibrated British gameshows.

Your points of caution are appreciated though - I am exceedingly "lucky" to have my eyes opened to the potential we have for world citizenry at a young age. I am extremely flawed as a person. Horribly flawed. I can't tie my own shoelaces. My sense of humor is awful. I certainly didn't mean to come off as anti-American or pseudo-American. I'm American as they come (and that American in Europe is hot, Fred. Though, she'd look better in flat sneakers.) Forsooth! We're the modern equivalent of the Tea Party, no? Only this time, hopefully it's not a hoax - it's a very real, really peaceful revolution.

It starts with impeachment proceedings of Barack Obama - who promised to end the war and is instead expanding it - and the war crimes tribunal of George Walker Bush, Jr. Oh, wait. The war crimes tribunals are for horrible oppressors in countries with nice big potential mineral mines.

I'm just teasing you.

You're not a real American unless you can recite the entire Pledge of Allegiance on Superbowl Sunday at Disneyland after downing a six-pack of Budweiser while wearing a NASCAR T-shirt with your baseball cap backwards, I say! And you have to get a little tear in your eye, too, or it doesn't count!

Which reminds me, I just re-read the constitution (yes, in its awful entirety) and there needs to be some MAJOR overhauls. I don't know what these Ron Paul folks think they are defending, but nobody is 3/5 of a person. Nobody. And slavery is not "okay" if they are prisoners.

What we need is a reconstitution of the United States.

On Nov 30 each year we have demonstratios here; a bunch of fascists is remembering the death-day of an old King, well known for an offensive expansionist foreign policy. Then there is also a democratic anti-fascist demonstration, and in between the Police trying to protect the fascists from getting hurt.

Democracy, it is not about protecting the state from anti-democrats such as fascists.

In a democratic state there can be fascists, but in a fascist state there cannot be any democrats.

The Police usually have a big show-off and demonstrate the latest crowd-control technology. It seems like most basic things have gone forgotten. Democracy is not so much on the one-man-one-vote concept, even if it is a part of the Democracy.

Democracy is about removing a bad government, with legal means, without the need of taking their heads off!

The back side of Police crowd-control is that you can not have a big demonstration, express your view, and force the view on the politicians.
The back side of anti-terrorist technology, and eves dropping on every one all the time, is that you can not have a resistance movement, should the country be occupied or ruled by fascists.
The back side of a situation, where the crowd is controlled by lying on the News, is that it disrupt the legal foundation of the democracy and you reach a fascist state, where ultimately the heads of the government have to come off!

On the "Shills".
It seems that there are some unofficial list of people, who only pretend to help. More interesting, is what they say. Especially what they did say in the beginning, before it was known that they would not help. This list will include only the most basic lies, that pose no real threat the the "perpetrators". It can also include false concepts, that should lead us all in the wrong direction. Such as criminal "perpetrators".

To rule by spreading rumours and false information is well known. I would like to see some interviews with these non-helpers, to see if they really mean what we think of them.
