We had a very mild earthquake in LA this morning. Nowhere near enough to cause any damage. My neighborhood's dogs didn't even bother to bark.

But, here is how a couple of our local news twits responded to it:

Just trawling the web and came across this:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... ft-up.html
What caught my eye was the reference to a fairly famous photograph that I would think many have seen taken in Manhattan during the construction of the RCA building [I'd always thought it was the Empire State] and the reference to a number [or part of at least], oh, so dear to our hearts...Image

It's nice to see this forum has returned to something approaching the old normality and most of the obviously troll-ish entities have either ceased to be differential or have just fucked off to pastures new! Anyway, I'm still trying to spread the 'Anti-Media' diatribe' via the gift of music. I'm getting too old for this shit but it keeps me going I suppose!

Yay - glad to see you back Jay - and in top form at that! As it is, music helps me going on too in this mad world.

And remember - if we're too old to rock'n'roll, we're also ...

I partially agree. Clinging on to the part of childhood that involves constant questioning and evaluation of the world should be held onto dearly. The part that promotes the belief in Santa Clause and monsters under the bed however, should be eschewed where possible :D

I haven't heard the Jethro song for years. Nice call!

I am not sure whether there is a discussion about the so called "Ebola" virus that is supposedly wreaking havoc in Guinea (West Africa). I saw this video
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... uinea.html
and couldn't help but notice that this might be similar to the Invention of AIDS for which we have a thread by the same title here at cluesforum. In fact I would say that it is reminiscent of the AIDS stories of the 90's. A terrifying virus which originates in Africa from contact with monkeys via bats. But here the virus is a faster and more destructive killer than the HIV. Also notice how the white Medecin Sans Frontiere employees (agents?) dress the locals in complete biohazrd outfits probably to subliminally inculcate the fear of this unknown fiction. And how can the ladies washing these outfits handle them without biohazard outfits?

Yes J,

I tend to try and block out the "news" when I'm somewhere like the barber's, like where I was yesterday, but this one got through my defences somehow.

The Media = Fear Sans Frontiere.

@JLapage: it requires body to body contact to spread. That's not to say I disagree with any hoaxing/fear-mongering talk, but that's why. I'm also not saying it is real or a phantom, but read on for a certain telling key word.

Here's the cdc chart of outbreaks -- they're few and far between and many are lab-related.

http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/resources/ ... table.html

I find it interesting that there seems to be talk of a vaccine this time around. As if we need that.

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2014/0 ... zwpgFfDXCF
In March, the University of Texas and three other organizations got $26 million in funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health to find a cure for Ebola and another deadly virus, Marburg, in case they are ever used for bioterrorism.
(How convenient.)

Guivre,
They have been studying these viruses (Ebola and Marburg) for a long time. I doubt that it's anything more than a plan to scare people in general and to justify the money that is being split between the University of Texas and the pharmaceutical companies.

I remember reading in the AIDS thread that there was a doctor who injected himself with the HIV to prove the fear mongers wrong. How do we know that the Ebola and Marburg viruses are as advertized?

On my drive home from work this evening in Dallas our regular "programming" was replaced with another alleged shooting at Fort Hood. I live in Texas so not unusual to have to hear about it since the alleged shooting occurred here. I checked Youtube and was surprised that this is also news on SkyNews which I suspect means our friends in Europe also have to be bothered with this. Looks like the script is not changing much, more fear mongering, and I guess there will be some donation pages to help the sims, etc. Yuck. I wonder if other countries get these localized shootings and they are not quite big enough for global consumption? Or, are we here in America the main source of Hollywood created terror to share beyond the border?

Okay,I did not put much text with my links. Let me put in some qualifiers this time, if I am awake enough, very little sleep this week, very very tired. Please excuse if this post is too repetitive.

I find it notable that people are putting Ebola and vaccine in the same sentence now, and there was just an award of research money in March with the buzz/trigger word of bioterrorism. And now we have an "outbreak". To me that is saying LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME, BE SCARED OF ME to the average reader. Also that looks as if it is a test balloon to see if people might be receptive to a vaccine (more can be said abotu that in another post), 20 years after the 83% death rate "outbreak" and after the movie of the same name (which came out in the same exact year, 1995). Also in 1994 was the thriller Hot Zone.

If folks have forgotten:

From Wiki:
Due to the detailed and graphic descriptions of the effects of exotic tropical diseases, as well as the revelation that an ebola virus was found a few miles away from Washington D.C., The Hot Zone was hailed by many as a chilling and accurate story of lethal viruses and their encounters with humans.[3][4] Because Preston's writing style is that of a "science fact" thriller, some critics[5] accused Preston of dramatizing and exaggerating the effects of an Ebola virus infection and embellishing facts with his own imagination. Since its publication in 1994, however, The Hot Zone is generally regarded as a nonfiction work and acknowledged for its masterful dramatization.[who?] In his blurb, horror writer Stephen King called the book, "one of the most horrifying things I've ever read." When asked whether any book "scared the pants off you" television writer Suzanne Collins answered, "The Hot Zone, by Richard Preston. I just read it a few weeks ago. Still recovering."
So plenty of scare tactics years ago when the idea was new. Also, blurred lines right there, "non-fiction thriller" sounds like the literary version of a "reality show".

Small note on the Ebola numbers, 63 % death rate not scary enough? Let's go to 86%, then 98% (Zaire 2006).

All and all a ton of emotional manipulation going on here.Throw in some crying doomed sisters and we're seeing some familiar patterns.

The only thing that might put this in the "real" camp is that Americans don't really pay a ton of attention to Africa. If you notice Outbreak the movie was US lab-related, also like The Hot Zone. Maybe this has something to do with keeping Africa colonized and controlled in a post colonial era? Is that even possibly what the story of AIDS in Africa is really about? Do we have any Africa based members of this forum that could shed some light on this?

Here's the CDC update page. http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/outbreaks/ ... index.html

Concerning the so called Ebola thing. There is a dispute regarding the classification of the deaths as to whether they are due to an 'epidemic' or simply an 'outbreak'. The numbers are about 180 allegedly infected since January of this year and about 49 confirmed deaths due to the Ebola virus. WHO says it's not an epidemic while Medecins Sans Frontieres insist that it is an unprecedented epidemic of gargantuan proportions. In the mean time the reports of the so called ravages of this monster are causing panic in the populations of various countries neighboring Guinea in West Africa. Does this ring a bell as compared to the so called AIDS 'pandemic'? "For now, local authorities are doing all they can to contain the spread, some urging more drastic measures than others - as well as being asked to stop shaking hands and kissing, Liberians are now being warned not to have sex as well." http://www.abc.net.au/worldtoday/conten ... 976676.htm
How ridiculous can these perps really be? But they know people are gullible.

I just happened across this.
Before The Sun Goes Down, a TV play which caused audience panic and questions to be raised in the British Parliament when it was shown on 20 February 1959. Taking inspiration from Orson Welles' 1938 radio drama of The War of the Worlds, the production used a similar format in which a regular program broadcast was interrupted by a fake public service announcement. In this instance it was about a mysterious and "terrifying" satellite seen hovering over the city of London
