Speaking of the Dream, there are some interesting comparisons given here and here of MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech vs. an earlier speech given to the Republican National convention of 1952 by a black preacher named Archibald Carey who was known by King.

Plagiarism? You decide. :D

Re:Hoi Poloi This is a fascinating and depressing case to examine.

Jesus, that is a fascinating and polished essay of rhetorical prose, I must say. The strident and labored sentence with the phrase
"....as if to obstinately stand against the discomfort of truth while the quest for truth hasn't even been started yet." is like driving through a tunnel where it is full sunlight on one side and coming out the other side in a bleak, grey deluge. Good work!

Well the guy is a well known plagiarist. I think he plagiarized his doctoral dissertation. " His habit of plagiarizing others’ work, intentionally or not, can be found in the various drafts of his dissertation. King borrowed from several secondary sources without proper citation, including a dissertation written by fellow Crozer student Jack Boozer for DeWolf three years earlier, and a review of Tillich’s Systematic Theology written by one of King’s former professors." (Source: Stanford.edu) I am not sure if the final revision was plagiarized but I think it might have been.

Thanks, Lazlo. I am not intending to depress anyone, just expressing what it feels like to me. Who knows?

The Guinness Book of World Records' highest grossing actor, Samuel L. Jackson, was an usher at MLK's funeral according to his wiki and other sources. In the following year after the alleged shooting and while a student at Morehouse College, he and a few other students were said to have held members of the Morehouse College board of trustees hostage on the campus, including Martin Luther King, Sr., demanding reform in the school's curriculum and governance. He was suspended from college for a couple of years and looks to have hooked up with a few of the high-profile members of the black power movement in the meantime (including Stokely Carmichael,"Honorary Prime Minister" of the Black Panther Party), but his mom removed him from the situation because the FBI told her that he would be killed unless he left. He would later return to the same college to earn his Bachelor of Arts in Drama in 1972. A quick study evidently, he would make his feature debut in the independent film Together for Days in the same year.

Strange... It doesn't appear that Samuel L. Jackson had much at all to worry about regarding Stokely Carmichael per the FBI's advice as Stokely looks to have already been an associate of the good Dr. King. There does however appear to have been a target of Stokely's angst regarding the alleged assassination.

Image
On April 5, 1968, in a press conference held the day after the slaying of Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights activist Stokely Carmichael predicts the outbreak of more violence across the nation in retaliation for "white America's biggest mistake."

We know already that the rock band U2 made a teeny blunder when they crooned "Early morning, April four
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky." It wasn't until the early evening that the alleged murder occurred. Just after 6 pm, to be more precise.
After the shooting, King was taken by ambulance to the emergency ward at St. Joseph's Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m. King's closest aides contacted Robert Lewis Jr.—a local funeral director who had coincidentally met King two days prior—to retrieve his body and prepare it for viewing.
The prior coincidental meeting with Mr. Lewis must have gone well.
During King's visit to Memphis, the Lewis funeral home had provided him with a chauffeured limousine. The driver, Solomon Jones, an employee of the Lewis Funeral Home, was one of the last people to speak to King before he was shot, and also attempted to chase the shooter, to no avail.
(I wonder if the driver attempted to chase the shooter at his officially reported location or where the folks in the famous photo were pointing...) <_<

After being pronounced dead....
Within an hour, his body was transported to the office of the Chief Medical Examiner at John Gaston Hospital, where Dr. Jerry Francisco performed an autopsy.
(This is the same medical examiner that, at a future date would perform the autopsy on another "King" who allegedly died while near his "throne", Elvis Presley.)
King's closest aids contacted Robert Lewis Jr. to retrieve the body and prepare it for viewing. The autopsy was completed at around 11:00 p.m., and at 11:15 p.m. King's body arrived at the R.S. Lewis & Sons Funeral Home. The assassins' bullet, as well as the subsequent autopsy, had caused significant damage to King's neck and face, and both Robert Jr. and Clarence labored through the night embalming, grooming and preparing King's body—while listening to crackling recordings of King's speeches. Ralph Abernathy commented "the body appeared unblemished. The morticians had done their job well."
Re-post of photo for brevity's sake
Image

And the very next morning on April 5...
Coretta Scott King arrived in Memphis the following morning on a plane personally arranged by Robert F. Kennedy. Hundreds began showing up at the funeral home, where a viewing and memorial service took place.
Approximately 16 hours elapsed from gunshot-to-open-casket-display at the funeral home -- curiously quick like the Oswald affair. It's a wonder how anyone might have been notified that the event was scheduled to occur, lest they desired to stop by to pay their final respects.

edit- I can not seem to find any specific information as to the details of the times of the Lewis Funeral Home showing other than the prior "morning" citation.

A few days later on April 9 in Atlanta.
The first, private service began at 10:30 a.m. EST at Ebenezer Baptist Church, and was filled with some 1,300 people; among the dignitaries present were labor leaders, foreign dignitaries, entertainment and sports figures and leaders from numerous religious faiths. The service began with Rev. Ralph Abernathy delivering a sermon which called the event "one of the darkest hours of mankind."
The private funeral was followed by the loading of King's casket onto a simple wooden farm wagon pulled by two local mules. The procession down the three-and-a-half miles from Ebenezer Baptist Church to Morehouse College was observed by over 100,000 people; the Southern Christian Leadership Conference commissioned a security detail to manage the crowd, while the Atlanta Police Department limited their participation to management of automobile traffic and to accompany dignitaries attending the events.
(The same Morehouse college that Samuel L. Jackson would allegedly hold MLK Jr's dad hostage the following year.)
Image

And a final tidbit of interesting UN info along with an appearance of yet another future U.S. politician...
Among the persons leading the procession, besides the immediate family of the civil rights leader, were Jesse Jackson, who held the flag of the United Nations, now Congressman John Lewis, and Andrew Young who was at one time the Mayor of Atlanta and also Ambassador to the United Nations.

On April Fools' Day 2008 theguardian.co.uk published a series of pictures of the 'assassination.' There's, of course, the iconic 'balcony pointing' image without the fire hydrant extinguisher (http://www.theguardian.com/world/galler ... =333340720) and directly beneath it there's the image of the 'girl on balcony looking at camera' with the fire hydrant extinguisher (http://www.theguardian.com/world/galler ... =333340675). Wow, talk about IN YOUR FACE!

At gettyimages.com you can purchase the 'balcony pointing' image without the fire hydrant extinguisher:

Reason: I think you meant 'extinguisher' though 'hydrant' has familiar Memphis-y connotations

Dear ICfreely,

I hotlinked the two Getty images into your above post. (Let's see if Getty sues us for copyrights for one or the other pic...)

But wait... perhaps all this is just due to some funky - uh - compression artifact ? Surely no one would have any reason to tamper with such a historical photographic document? :P

They photo-shopped the Fire Extinguisher, but not its reflection in the patio doors/windows? Very odd...

I think the removal was "de-compositional". Our eyes are to be directed along the line of the pointing fingers ( á la the NineEleven Show) towards an empty sky. The extinguisher draws your eye away. Removing the reflection from the glass may have proved more difficult in those days. Never mind the casual strollers below, the crazy array of doors and windows, the central jumble of steel stairs, and the hand drawn smoke arising from the chimney pot. The whole image has a 2D flat back-lot appearance - designed to show nothing.

Maybe this is where the film 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' got it's inspiration for pointing when the 'aliens' spotted an imposter (a human from their perspective)...they're pointing, saying 'the real MLK went thattaway!'...

Thataway being Liberia. You know that place where everybody should stay away from! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberia

Once again, and you may not agree, but the above images are not photographs. They are photographic laboratory compositions. I applied a simple displacement to the image, this is an old school cut and paste job - literally. All of the objects and planes in the image were inserted manually. There is a distinct thin line around all the objects - the roof-line most noticeably. The cars are hilarious. All the way to Taipei.

Image

Image

Look at this closely, see all the little bits missing? Invisible when shrunk and degraded. The outlines are more apparent too.

Image

This is an edge detect. Those objects are pretty "edgy". Interesting too, that quite possibly the Photographic Boys in the Lab were given something like this to work with and to "fill in".

Good catch hoi! All apologies. I was so bewildered & in such a rush to post the links... Thanks for the correction.
Simon, in this cartoon fake-believe world we inhabit, “Speaking of right and wrong, there really are no wrong or right images [it's a] matter of aesthetics — taste.” you see. Maybe you Europeans have a thing for fire extinguishers.

Seeing as tomorrow is Martin Luther King Day in America, would the fine folks over at Getty Images like to explain the following discrepancy?
