Many thanks to my Italian friend Alessio - for finding these 4 fascinating images of the "Chicago Pile N°1":

And here's the marvellous account of how Enrico Fermi decided it was time for lunch - "just as the "thing was gonna go critical" - and history's first nuclear chain reaction was about to take place...

Ahh - you just can't beat the Italians' unyielding devotion for the sacred lunch-break! :D

WALTER ZINN - (at age 35?)

I really need your help here, folks! I am stuck and scratching my head - over this image supposedly depicting Walter Zinn (at age 35) standing by the "Chicago Pile 1" - sometime in the year 1942. Of course, Walter Zinn was one of Enrico Fermi's closest collaborators - or at least that's what we have been told :

Does this man look like a 35-year-old?
Now, if there's something I am missing here - please let me know !

^ Gosh their eyebrows popped right out at me before I read.

"Don't touch that big red button Walter". "What, this one?" Look at the blackened area between thumb and hand!

The operator looks kinda familiar in a Lee Harvey Oswald kinda way and the stage is set for the later asstronot photos.

Is there an original version of this anywhere that hasn't been treated to the Waking Life rotoscoping effect?

Operation Hurricane 1952 (UK)

Unread post by Kiwigal »

I hope you will be gentle with me as this is my first post on this thread.

As I stated in my 'handshake email', my interest is currently "HMS Tracker" (LST 3522 built in Canada, and renamed Tracker in 1947 as per the link in my introduction post) - one of the ships that took part in the first British atomic bomb tests in October 1952 at the Montebello islands off Australia.

My father was part of the crew of Tracker as a telegrapher in the radio room and over the years has tried to find out more about what went on, and for him specifically to get compensated. (A totally different angle from what I am researching.) Needless to say he has given up, and at 80 years old, I don't blame him.

After reading this thread my curiosity has set me off again in search of as much information as I can find - and it is quite hard to find anything other than the 'official story'.

I have emailed him a ton of questions and to get him to add anything else he remembers so that I have it in writing and can do some digging. Previously we've merely chatted casually about it.

Meanwhile I did find this declassified document which I have downloaded and will be pouring over later. I did scroll through it online and there are a lot of documents, references and photos pertaining to atomic bombs, biological agents etc that aren't just about Operation Hurricane, so thought it might be of interest here.

http://archive.org/details/BritishNucle ... sToWinston

If you have popcorn, there is also a *cough* 30 minute 'movie' released by the UK National Archives.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/film ... r_hurr.htm

I hope to put together something more once I get the reply from my father and can go off searching. The reason I am finding it so hard to do is that when he applied for his service records from HMS Tracker he was told there are none for him. Lost at sea perhaps!

Anyway, thank you for your great threads which have helped me look into a lot of things from different angles, and I hope I posted this in the right place.

Regarding the nuke hoax, has anyone read the book 'The Case Against The Atom' by Dewey B. Larson?
I have been putting some excerpts up on my blog from this book. The ideas in this book are very stimulating and thought provoking.
When you think about the nuke hoax, the nuke is really the nucleus of the atom that traps immense energy inside until we split the nucleus and release the energy. But how exactly did scientists discover the nucleus? Where there any alternative theories considered to describe the atom? What if the atom doesn't have a nucleus inside it? What if an atom is not made out of 'parts'?

I haven't read it but from reading the article you have posted, apart from it being truly interesting, it does bring up, yet again, the whole question of 'Natural Philosophy' now known as Science being owned exclusively by profit makers, doesn't it?

FRENCH MISSILE DEBACLE

Image
http://en.europeonline-magazine.eu/fren ... 79243.html

Mon Dieu, mes amis! Today, we learn that a French M51 missile capable of carrying 6 to 10 nuclear warheads (!!!) was launched from a nuclear-powered submarine but - hélas! - miserably exploded / self-destroyed in its first phase of propulsion. Merde alors!

The captain of the nuclear submarine, Lionel Delort, told a press conference:
"It‘s a failure, the reasons for which will be determined by an investigation," he said.

Oh, good! What comforting information: it was just a failure. And it will be investigated - so that we can feel safer next time the French test their war toys. We don't want our EuroNukes to explode over the wrong city, do we? Hopefully, the cause of the problem will be resolved - just like they did back in 1996, as this 'historical reminder' of the article points out:
"In 1996, a test fire of an M45 - the percursor to the M51 - similarly failed when the missile exploded over the sea, defence sources said. "The cause of that problem was found and resolved," the sources added."

Fantastique! They solved the problem all the way back in 1996, so with this invaluable previous experience and knowledge, they'll surely be able to solve it yet again, pas de problème! Vive la France!

Now, if you even dare question whether this event ever took place, think again: we have an eyewitness, oui madame!
A resident of the area told France 3 television she heard a loud noise above the sea.
"I saw white smoke in the sky and huge pieces of debris falling into the sea. At first I thought it was a plane crashing into the ocean," the woman, identified as Françoise, told the station.

Françoise saw it all happen with her own eyes, folks - so don't come here with any fancy theories, you brainless conspiracytards without a life! Understandably, the madam cares for her privacy - thus, no last name is released. So make no mistake: La France has the capability to drop half-a-dozen warheads in your backyard - they only need a little more time to perfect their missile launcher. And all these trillion euros and noble military efforts are deployed to make us, the public, feel safer in the event of a Third World War, c'est compris? Honni soit qui mal y pense! <_<

Relax, folks: there exist no nuclear warheads - just a bunch of blockheads playing war games to scare you shitless.

Yes, this is the "nuclear-powered" submarine that supposedly carries the above-mentioned M51 nuclear missiles - which keep popping out of the sky a few miles after launch. French taxpayers must love it! Quel joli jouet! Allons enfants!
