Rejected and controversial New Yorker cover art: exclusive Boing Boing preview gallery
By Mark Frauenfelder at 1:31 pm Tuesday, May 1
For the last 20 years, Françoise [Mouly] has been the art editor of The New Yorker.

Blown Covers: New Yorker Covers You Were Never Meant To See [*Publication Date: April 30, 2012] is her new book. It's a collection of New Yorker covers that were either rejected, caused an outrage, or have an interesting story behind them.

Of the cover above, Françoise says, "In 1993, we published this cover by David Mazzuccelli as the trial of the four men suspected of the bombing of the World Trade Center got underway. There were bomb threats to the magazine, and the image was vehemently denounced -- at the time, most in the media were weary of labeling the men involved as Arab or Muslim terrorists."

Wiki: David Mazzucchelli

"'Castles in the Sand' (cover of The New Yorker, Jul 26, 1993)"

Just a quick design I whipped up, since the idea of stickers and t-shirts was being discussed :)

Something to be (partly) aware of...perhaps you all are already, and the joke's on me?

There appears to be an...awkward urban double-meaning to the word "clue". It appears to have North American origins, but, inevitably, it may have already spread wider across the english-speaking world.

I was totally oblivious to it until having accidentally watched an episode of 'South Park'. And that is (so far) the only conduit via which I've personally heard it- but I have seen it used in writing on some 'yoof-speak' forums, and only in ironic senses.

See http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=clue

Whether this is an entirely-unfortunate connotation or not, I'm not sure....just thought I should make sure others were aware (esp Simon)

(ps the t-shirt design is excellent)
