Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings
All kinds of things may be, could be, would be nice ... because they fit some concept aka belief system. Then there is what can be experienced - no speculation involved. Ignoring that in favour of "may be, could be, would be nice ...", or horrible, for that matter, may be a fun game. The p...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings
Whow! ... And once again this year, the Rev.Pat Robertson's prayers to protect the thousands of Satellites in orbit from being hit by millions of dust particles and bigger lumps of ice and rock have been answered. ... Beliefs are so amazingly powerful ;) Just ignore all actual evidence and you are g...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings
It has been put forward, too, that it is actually pretty easy a task to verify data as well as location - the latter being the much easier part. (one outside reference in the previous post) There is no need to speculate. And it has been mentioned also that space is vast and dense is a relative term....

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings
After this one I'll stop that kind of potentially annoying activity ;) I lifted a picture from the wikipedia article terence linked to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite which depicts various orbits in true scale. http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j326/jonathanjomen/Orbits_around_earth_scale_...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings
Sorry to be confusing, myself. What I mean is that if we can spot one in the dark - when it is dark - and it looks like a satellite, then the shiny lights have quite an excuse to be there. Does that make sense? I am imagining some kind of infrared or radar or something that could help us 'spot' the...

Re: ENDEAVOUR - and the spaced-out NASA efforts
What strikes me as odd with this picture is the projection of the smoke-trail onto the clouds below.simonshack wrote:...
The above picture may well be authentic - but what sort of detail do we have of the airborne object on top of this smoke trail? ...
It seems way too sharp all the way.

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings
This is only to further try to clarify my viewpoint, not meant as proof... I was actually trying to create a picture which represents the true dimensions we are dealing with here. And I might even succeed creating one of Earth with satellites orbits in its true dimensions relative to each other - an...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings
Sorry - no pictures. Have no experience in creating such. And my trigonometry is rusty. If I'm not gravely mistaken the angular difference between the gray and the black areas (in the picture terence.drew introduced and which has subsequently being used...) are exaggerated by orders of magnitude! Th...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings
... Of course the equator would also allow light at times because the Earth is tilted on its axis and there would even be periods where something going around the dark of the Earth via the equator line would peek into the sunlight. It would have to be a very specific orbit that allows a satellite t...

No, I actually don't.
And I also don't another thing: appreciate that kind of language.

... Do you get it or do you not? I get what you mean - I think ;) And I already did respond - with my suggestion to use scale models, to experiment. To really see for yourself the effects of earths shadow from the sun. Kindly look at hoi.polloi's post too. What appeals to me is my own business - ex...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings
Radio waves at or below 30MHz easily travel across the earth even when being propagated from a ground station. Wavelengths used for satellite comunication are are much smaller than that - frequencies much higher. Such high frequencies won't propagate as far when coming from ground stations - just l...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings
Satellites lit from the sun? This is interesting. I do not have the problem of not believing in the existence of satellites. I also do not have a problem with them being visible via reflection of sunlight. Draw scale models. Experiment. And you will truly see. My - to me... - much stronger point wa...

Re: Satellites : general discussion and musings
There is no explanation for the satcom transmissions I picked up on non-satcom antenna. It is impossible unless the transmissions were coming over standard radio waves utilizing encryption. In fact this is the one and only explanation. GPS utilizes triangulation and encrypted radio waves as well. I...
